I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy as the world continues to struggle with functioning in these times of Covid19. It seems as if Europe and particularly Greece are committed to supporting tourism in the late spring and into the summer of 2021. Greece is planning on fully opening up to international travel as of mid-to-late May 2021. The most recent news is that travel will be allowed with either full vaccination or a negative PCR Covid-19 test result.
In 2021 I have been able to travel and work to what I feel has been the greatest degree possible. At times travel and work have been frustrating, but looking back i am grateful for the possibilities that I have had. From December 2020 through the end of March 2021 I worked for San Juan Mountain Guides out of Ouray Colorado in the USA. I was mostly guiding backcountry multi-pitch ice climbing and ski touring. I also spent time in the world famous Ouray Ice Park (a truly impressive set up!) coaching ice climbing, conducting various courses, rigging for the Ouray Ice Festival and training during my time off from guiding. This relationship with San Juan Mountain Guides will continue in 2022, further opening up possibilities for offering other climbing programs in North America. I returned to Salzburg Austria at the beginning of April 2021 to continued snow and winter weather. This year has been a long winter season that just seems to keep going regardless of on which continent i find myself!
The desire for warm weather, sunny rock climbing has certainly risen. Usually, I am on Kalymnos by mid-April with the motivation to begin intensively sport climbing. However with the continuing effects of Covid-19 I have to adapt to all the various restrictions that the situation has created.
My Kalymnos season will begin in July 2021. Prior to getting to Kalymnos, I have a guiding commitment in June in the USA. After that, I should arrive on Kalymnos on about the 28th of June. I plan on staying on Kalymnos until mid-November. Below is the schedule of courses on Kalymnos for the 2021 season:
